I agree it's software based. I didn't hear anything about this anymore, so I'm assuming you checked the firewall? If you have Norton, it's a horrible program which blocks almost everything, so you should still check that befor formatting your drive.

I highly doubt it's a firewall issue. Firewall usually restricts the access of files that are accessing the internet, not crash a program entirely.
If your firewall bares capability to crash a program, I'd highly advise against using it.
Try this before formatting:

RAM timings are on Auto, also I would never have norton - checked firewall on and off, has nothing to do with the crashes.

Been trawling a bit more on the specifics of CoD 4 crashing in multiplayer.
Read this for starters: http://www.computing.net/gaming/wwwb...orum/8820.html - one problem cropping up a lot is Punkbuster - try d/ling an updated copy. Oh, and see if it works when you plug a mic in >< (I know, I know..)
Believe it or not, after posting that, I found ANOTHER forum (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum...fm/905335.html) - with someone else saying CoD4 multiplayer will NOT work without a mic plugged in.
This CAN'T be the answer, surely?

I had to plug my mic in to make skype's calls stay up, if I had no mic in, it would automatically drop them - I'll check it out in a bit.
Also I'll try to uninstall punkbuster and other things to see if that helps, and I'll read those forums in a bit too. Have to go clean now though.
Oh my freaking god, Snograt, I love you!
It was the mic.. I plugged it in, and the game started up on the first try, rofl.
Thank god that saved me a lot of trouble.

Do you know, I just knew as soon as I read that second report that it was going to be the answer.
What awful, awful programming.

Aye, It just sucks that I found this out after the fact that I screwed with my drivers and such, at least I didn't pull a major stunt.
Oh well, at least I can play the game now.. so now I just have to find out how to copy my multi-player data over to here, don't want to rank up to 50 again.

Wow, that mic thing is a really bizzare problem. Kinda funny actually.
Manually update punkbuster though and that should be that .

I don't think 2010 is a delay. IIRC, MS runs a 5 year lifecycle on their OS'es. Vista came out, what 06-07? That would mean the next desktop would be released 11-12 timeframe.

XP came out a year after ME did
Maybe since 7 was planned right after Vista (within' a year or two) and now it's being pushed to 2010 caused it to be a 'delay'.

What's the point in releasing so many OS's in a short amount of time though? Surely XP was a success, but it also lived a very long lifespan before being ''replaced''.
I just hope my money doesn't go to waste on this, I'd at least like to get 4 or some years of use before a newer OS comes out.

Think of Vista as a Windows XP Service Pack, and think of Windows 7 as a new OS.
Probably

Does anyone else get seemingly random crashes with x64?
I have everything updated and a pretty good computer imo
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
Mushkin SP PC2-6400 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-18
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64BIT
AuzenTech X-FI Prelude 7.1
EVGA E-GEFORCE 8800GTS 640MB
Q6600
everything has been updated from their official websites and I don't know what else to do. is it normal to crash randomly? 1/2 the time it shows the send error message to anet but the other 1/2 it just goes black and the sound loops
there's no error code either.
is it because it's running an emulated 32bit? should I try to run compatibility mode or something?
if there's any other info I can post let me know

It's your RAM. Sounds like one of the sticks are bad/undervolted. Mushkin requires atleast +2.1v, make sure you have that for them set manually in the BIOS.

not a good idea... being 64 bit it is a bit of a ram hog... recommend 3+ GB of ram 4GB should suffice

Eh I only have 2 GB of ram and I get a 5.9 on Vista 64 bit with it, and the only thing I *sometimes* choke on is CPU load, with Guild Wars up and lots of multi-tasking it can hit 100% sometimes, bleh.
Oh yeah, and I notice no problems with two cores + Guild Wars on this system, so it must have been something with my Windows XP for sure.

Yeah, 2GB is plenty for Vista 64.
I usually run 2GB @ 800 3-3-3-6-1T or 4GB @ 1200 5-5-4-12-2T
@majestikk: Seriously, get those voltages checked out, it seems like the main cause of your problem.
